Hebert Henry Malamah-Thomas: A Foundation of Family and Faith


 Herbert Henry was born in Freetown, the son of The Hon. John Henry Malamah-Thomas and Annie Victoria Asgill. Raised in a prominent Krio family, his character was shaped by a culture that valued education, discipline, and a strong sense of duty.His devotion to his faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was a lifelong, dedicated member of the Holy Trinity Church in Freetown, where he served the congregation in nearly every possible lay capacity. Over the years, he was a chorister, a sidesman, the People’s Warden, and ultimately the Pastor’s Warden, the highest honor for a lay leader in the church. This deep involvement demonstrates a life guided by faith and a powerful commitment to his spiritual community.

A Distinguished Career in Public Service

Herbert Henry chose a career in the precise and demanding field of accountancy. He joined the Treasury of Sierra Leone, the government department responsible for the nation's finances. With a keen mind and an unimpeachable sense of integrity, he dedicated his professional life to serving his country.Through diligence and expertise, he rose through the ranks to become a Senior Accountant, holding a position of significant trust and responsibility. His work was crucial to the financial stability and administration of Sierra Leone during a period of immense change.

A Man of Honor and Family

In recognition of his distinguished service to the nation, he was honored with two significant titles:
  • Justice of the Peace (J.P.): A title bestowed upon citizens of high moral standing, empowering them to witness documents and perform other judicial functions.
  • Member of the Republic of Sierra Leone (MRSL): A prestigious national award conferred by the President to citizens who have rendered invaluable service to the country.
Herbert Henry built a loving and accomplished family with his wife, Edna Olive Thomas (née Gooding). Together, they raised four children who would go on to achieve great things in their own right, reflecting the values of education and excellence their parents instilled in them:
